The Pathophysiology of Bone Healing — What Happens after the Fracture 

Bone healing is one of the most efficient repair processes in the body. When a fracture occurs, the bone’s structure breaks, but the body immediately begins a multi-stage repair sequence guided by cells, blood flow, and mechanical stress.

Stages of bone healing
1. Inflammatory Phase (0–7 days)

3. Remodelling Phase (months to years)

Finally, the new bone reshapes itself to look and function like the original. Osteoclasts (bone-removing cells) smooth rough areas while osteoblasts strengthen key stress lines. With movement and load, the bone adapts and becomes even stronger.
